I have been waiting for our box of spares from E-Z-go for 2 weeks. finally came but the diagnostic handheld box is empty.  a nice tire plug kit though. well, after reading a page of instructions on how to use it, I'm tempted to pass, we'll have to see.

Microsoft VS Apple VS IBM?

We have associations of the companies we deal with. I tend to view Toro as Microsoft'ish without the Bill Gate and company beginning. Jacobsen (and Ransomes) are more along the lines of Apple in that they came up with some game changing products, .e. the first reel mower, the first triplex greens mower and the lightweight fairway mower. John Deere is more IBM'ish, They're there but you don't see them much (at least not in my area). Toro seems to have gotten to the point where they have outgrown their own designers and are now buying companies rather than coming up with their own. When you skip the birth of a product and all that brings to the growing process, I think one misses a lot. Particularly the 99 ways to make it that didn't work.. If we look at history though, it's a part of a well run company. Then they become really big and bulky. Decision making becomes a process weighed down by committee. People start to leave because of a lack of individual freedom and choice. Or not, in a really successful company. Time will tell here.. Jacobsen, with the history of innovation and a new President, David Withers, is capable of making a rise to it's former dominance. Being part of the Textron group has given them the resources to stay in the game. I think this is their make or break period. Courses are starting to buy equipment again but there has been a pretty big shakeout in the industry the last few years. Some courses didn't make it through the poor economy. And it's an industry in decline, at least in the states. Booming in Asia.. So a lot is going on. I can't say that Toro is becoming a heartless behemoth because I know several people there and they are anything but heartless. Still, it's getting so big they're beginning to let things fall through the cracks. Jacobsen has a ton of possibilities but with the economy being what it is, it will still be tough. The biggest thing a manufacture can do is have distributors/dealers that are on the same page as they are.  That have the same goals.  I think we may see more company stores in the future.

Ipswich, Suffolk, UK (November 14, 2011) Cutting Edge Training, a division of Ransomes Jacobsen Limited, invited golf course technicians from around the UK to their international headquarters at Ipswich recently, to participate in the inaugural Technicians Forum. Ransomes Jacobsen is a Textron Inc. (NYSE; TXT) company. The two-day forum provided technicians from within the turfcare industry with a platform for recognition, discussion and education. It consisted of a mixture of seminars based on technology in the industry, the future of new technology and unbiased open technical discussions. The participants were given an insight into the direction of future technical development, how development is initiated and how it is implemented. They were then shown how equipment is built and how new developments are tested prior to full production. Commenting on the event, Matt Perks from Ham Manor GC said, “The forum was fantastic and it was a good chance to get to know other people in the industry away from the work environment.  As we all mentioned at the forum, we realise the cost and time it takes to put on these events and it was not taken for granted. I enjoyed it very much and also learned a few things as well; all in all, it was a complete success!” Stuart Hall from John O Gaunt GC added, “I believe it was a total success; far too often technicians are overlooked and once the typical reticence to speak was overcome, everybody was talking trade.” Hanfried Sievers of Cutting Edge Training concluded, “This was our first attempt at bringing technicians together in an open forum where the colour of the equipment you operate is irrelevant. It certainly was very well received and we will definitely be expanding it next year, inviting more technicians from across the industry.”
